Understanding Fuel Efficiency
Miles per gallon (MPG) is the standard measure of fuel economy in the United States. It tells you how far your vehicle can travel on one gallon of fuel. A higher MPG means better efficiency and lower fuel costs. This calculator also converts to metric units — km/L and L/100km — used in most other countries.
How MPG Is Calculated
The formula is simple: divide the total miles driven by the gallons consumed. If you know the total fuel cost and the price per gallon, we can derive gallons for you. The cost per mile is the total fuel cost divided by total distance, giving you a practical per-mile expense figure. For planning longer trips, try our fuel cost calculator.
Metric Conversions
To convert MPG to km/L, multiply by 0.425144. To get L/100km (commonly used in Europe and Australia), divide 235.215 by MPG. Lower L/100km values mean better efficiency. For example, a car getting 30 MPG uses about 7.84 litres per 100 kilometres. Need more unit conversions? Check out our unit converter.
Improving Your Fuel Efficiency
Several factors affect MPG: driving speed, tire pressure, vehicle weight, air conditioning use, and driving habits. Maintaining steady speeds on highways, keeping tires properly inflated, and reducing idling time can significantly improve your fuel economy. Tracking your MPG over time helps you spot maintenance issues early.
