Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

How Period Prediction Works

For example, if your last period started on March 1 and your cycle is 28 days, your next period is predicted for March 29. The tool repeats this calculation to project your next six cycles forward.
Ovulation is estimated at 14 days before the start of your next predicted period. This is based on the relatively consistent length of the luteal phase, which lasts approximately 14 days in most people regardless of total cycle length. The fertile window spans from 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after, reflecting the lifespan of sperm (up to 5 days) and the egg (12 to 24 hours).
Factors That Affect Cycle Regularity
Many factors can influence menstrual cycle regularity. Stress is one of the most common disruptors — both emotional and physical stress can delay ovulation and shift your cycle. Significant changes in body weight, intense exercise, travel across time zones, illness, and medications (including hormonal contraceptives) can all affect cycle timing. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and endometriosis may cause irregular cycles that are harder to predict.
For more accurate tracking, record your cycle start dates over several months and calculate your average cycle length. The more data you have, the more reliable the predictions become.
