Understanding Unicode Strikethrough Text
Unlike HTML's <del> or <s> tags, Unicode strikethrough text works anywhere plain text is accepted. It uses combining characters — special Unicode code points that overlay the preceding character with a visual mark. The combining long stroke overlay (U+0336) is the most commonly used, producing the classic strikethrough effect. Because the effect is embedded in the text itself, it survives copy-paste operations across platforms.
The Four Unicode Overlay Effects
Strikethrough (U+0336) draws a horizontal line through each character, mimicking the traditional "crossed out" look. This is the most widely recognized and is commonly used to show corrections, canceled items, or humorous redactions on social media. Underline (U+0332) adds a line below each character, useful when platform formatting does not support HTML underline. Slash (U+0337) overlays a short diagonal line, creating a "struck through with a slash" effect often seen in mathematical notation to denote negation. Tilde (U+0334) adds a wavy overlay, producing a distinctive decorative effect.
