Understanding Upside Down Text
Upside down text is created by mapping each character in your input to a Unicode character that visually resembles the original letter rotated 180 degrees. The Unicode standard contains thousands of characters from many writing systems, and some of these characters happen to look like inverted Latin letters. For example, the Latin letter "a" maps to the turned "a" character (U+0250, ɐ), while "e" maps to the turned "e" (U+01DD, ǝ). After each character is mapped, the entire string is reversed so it reads correctly when the screen is turned upside down.
Upside Down vs Mirror Text
This tool offers two distinct effects. Upside down text both flips each individual character to its inverted Unicode equivalent and reverses the character order. The result looks correct when you physically rotate your screen 180 degrees. Mirror text simply reverses the order of the original characters without changing any individual character. The result reads backwards, like text reflected in a mirror. Both effects are popular for creative social media posts, playful messages, and puzzle games.
Where It Works
Because these are real Unicode characters (not images or special formatting), upside down text can be pasted into any text field that supports Unicode. This includes social media platforms, messaging apps, email clients, and forum posts. For even more creative text effects, check out our Fancy Text Generator or Small Text Generator.
